This is a recipe passed down from my grandmother.  It’s a great way to enjoy hamburgers in the dead of winter without having to freeze outside next to the grill.

Ingredients:

2/3 cup evaporated milk (here’s a recipe substitute if you’re out)
1 to 1 1/2 pounds hamburger
1/2 cup crushed soda crackers
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped onion, yellow or green
1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
1 cup shredded cheese
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/2 to 1 loaf French bread (depending on the size and length of the loaf)

Mix together all ingredients except bread.  Cut bread in half lengthwise and lay on a foil lined cookie sheet.  Pile meat mixture on bread.  Bake at 350F for 45 minutes.  Slice and serve.
