Don’t let a yummy pancake or french toast breakfast be foiled when you’re out of syrup! Here’s a simple recipe for maple flavored syrup that only takes minutes to make. Perhaps the best part is if you leave it alone for a few weeks, it’ll start sprouting rock candy. Cracking open an old syrup bottle for the rock candy is a favorite childhood memory of mine (I’m not ashamed to admit I love sugar).

2 cups sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 Tablespoon Karo syrup
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon butter flavoring (optional)
Bring sugars, Karo syrup and water to a boil and reduce heat. Boil gently for five minutes and do not stir.
Add vanilla, maple flavoring and butter flavoring if desired. Makes about 4 cups of syrup.
