I found a recipe in my grandmother’s scrawling handwriting for homemade Dog Snax and decided to bake some.  Having no dog of our own, we took the crunchy treats to the pound and handed them out to some very eager yet incredibly sweet dogs.  Not one refused once it was pushed into their kennel.  I’d say this recipe was a success!

What did I say?  E-A-G-E-R!

Ingredients (makes about 20 three inch by one inch dog treats):

1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all-purpose white flour
3/4 nonfat dry milk
1/2 cup oatmeal
1 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 Tablespoon (about six cubes) instant beef, pork or chicken bouillon, dissolved in 1/2 cup hot water

Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly.  Cut in the shortening.

Add the eggs and the dissolved bouillon, kneading the dough by hand until it’s moist.

Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch thick.  Cut into pieces or use a cookie cutter.

Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 300F for 45 minutes until browned and crunchy when cooled.

(Since these don’t rise, you can pack them pretty close on the pan without any trouble).

  1. I have one question about the meat bouillion. The recipe said 1 T (about 6 cubes) of instant bouillion. That is two totally different measurements. Should I put 1 T or 6 cubes? Thank you!!! I can't wait to try these for our two girls.

  2. I just thought about the measurements again and I'm wrong…sorry!!! It's been a very long week. DUH!!! Thanks Again!!!
