Teach your kids to save early and to recycle by making them an adorable piggy bank from an old plastic bottle!  The material cost is low and it takes less than an hour to make.

What You’ll Need:

An empty bottle with screw-top lid
Scissors
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Acrylic paint and brush or spray paint
Craft foam
X-Acto knife
Miscellaneous decorations (jewels, wiggly eyes, flowers, etc)

1.  Carefully cut a slit along the length of the the bottle, wide and long enough for a quarter to fit through.

2.  Paint your bottle.  If using acrylic paint, it takes three or four coats (no worries–acrylic paint dries pretty quickly).

3.  Cut a spiral shape out of the craft foam, stretch it out and glue it to the back of the bottle.

4.  Cut out ears from the craft foam.  To make them symmetrical, cut one, flip it over and cut around the first shape.  Hot glue to the bottle.

5.  Glue or paint on eyes.

6.  Cut a square from the foam, roll together and glue.  Cut a hoof shape and cut the top following the curve of the bottle.

8.  Glue front legs to bottle.

9.  Follow step seven for the hind legs, omitting the cut for the curve of the bottle.  Glue legs beneath bottle.

10.  Paint and glue on any final details.

Remember it doesn’t have to be perfect–children are forgiving of flaws.  They’ll see the cute little piggy bank you made.
