This recipe was a cute and tasty addition to our monthlong Halloween celebration. They taste like pumpkin pie in a roll and the kids had fun pretending which bones of a person they might possibly be. Gruesome, I know, but it’s part of the fun of Halloween. These were ready in the time to took me to make the rest of dinner and the kids had fun helping which means less work for me. Win!

Ingredients:

Breadsticks
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 Tablespoon yeast
2 Tablespoons sugar
2 Tablespoon butter, softened
1 teaspoon salt
4 cups flour

Filling
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1 Tablespoon maple syrup
2 Tablespoons melted butter
1 Tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

In a large bowl, stir together the water, yeast, and sugar. Let rest about five minutes, until the mixture is frothy. Stir in butter, then add salt and flour. Knead about five minutes or until the dough is soft and elastic. Cover and let rest until doubled in size, about twenty minutes.

Meanwhile, mix together the filling by mixing together all ingredients except the sugar and cinnamon. When the dough is ready, divide it in two, and roll out to equal-sized rectangles, about 1/4 inch thick. On one rectangle, spread the filling, then place the other rectangle over the top of the first. Cut into strips about two inches wide. Carefully twist the strips about three times. Snip the ends to make them look like twisted bones. Place on a lined baking sheet.

Heat the oven to 400F. Brush the twisted pumpkin bones with the melted butter and sprinkle generously with the combined sugar and cinnamon. Bake for about 12 to 15 minutes or until they’re golden and firm. Drizzle with icing, powdered sugar, or dipped in whipped cream.
